The chief of the Irish Catholic Church is looking for an urgent meeting with the Irish government over what he calls for a”draconian” ban on public Mass..

Archbishop Eamon Martin accused the government of acting in a”covert manner without consultation or notice”.

Irish Health Minister Stephen Donnelly signed a regulation last week allowing only virtual spiritual services as a result of pandemic.

The archbishops said they considered his action”a violation of trust”.

They are looking for legal advice.

In a statement, Archbishop Martin said he became aware on Friday that a statutory instrument was printed a week about the matter.

He predicted the movement both”provocative” and”draconian”, including the law was”confusing and unnecessary”.

“The precise provisions are uncertain and initially reading seem to be draconian, going farther than the limitations we have been cooperating with during the pandemic to date,” he explained.

“We will be seeking legal counsel to advise several questions concerning the degree of the statutory instrument.”

Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Micheál Martin fulfilled Irish bishops, including Archbishop Martin, on Thursday, 15 April.

Archbishop Martin said it was highly disappointing that despite the reassurances given that the taoiseach knew the value of worship to those of Ireland, this statutory instrument was introduced”in a covert fashion and without notice or consultation”.

The Irish health minister has defended the present limitations on Mass, stating there is a ban on all big indoor gatherings due to the dangers introduced by Covid-19.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ has reported that Mr Donnelly said he was aware it was a serious imposition for a good deal of people and as soon as public health information deemed it secure, people Mass could be permitted.

He also stated he would be delighted to fulfill the bishops.
